ABOUT… award-winning writer Joanna Simon

I wouldn’t like to say when I started tasting wine, but I haven’t stopped sniffing it, sipping it, spitting it and writing about it since the 1980s, including 22 years as The Sunday Times wine critic. I am now the Wine & Food Editor of House & Garden magazine, which means I eat and drink for a living as well as for pleasure. I write for many other magazines, including Classic FM and Decanter and my books have been published all over the world. Many moons ago I was editor of Wine magazine and before that of Wine & Spirit

I am a co-founder of, a unique online publication which ensures that more of my tasting notes now get shared, rather than merely being stored for posterity on my computer, and I’m a panel chair of the International Wine Challenge and other leading competitions.

As well as occasionally venturing out of my comfort zone into other drinks, I have written many cookery features for The Sunday Times. It all started with a series on using wine and other booze – such an easy way to add lustre and luxury to your cooking – and has gone on from there.

One more thing: I give tastings, talks and presentations to groups and individuals, so do get in touch.
