About

A creative designer with over 30 years of experience merging artistic vision with technical expertise. Website design, IT support and strategic direction, with an ability to adapt as technology changes.

A strong advocate for clarity and effective communication, consistently solving complex problems with innovative solutions. Committed to high-quality results, collaboration and excellence in every project.

Passionate about using emerging AI tools to drive creative projects forward, with a full understanding of both the possibilities and the deficiencies of AI, and always focused on user-centric design that meets diverse needs. I work daily with Anthropic’s Claude to build websites, tools and workflows, and to speed up design and production without losing a human eye for quality.

Design & Technical Consultancy

Freelance, self-employed

June 1999 – Present

I set up my own design and technical consultancy and have worked on a wide range of projects: websites, IT support, print, video, audio, product design and strategic direction. I have also typeset and designed a number of hardback books.

Since the pandemic I have worked exclusively in digital web design. I currently host and maintain more than 15 websites on my own server, and encourage self-supporting sites with training and full support.

Clients include LSA International, The Art Fund, Authentics Ltd, Minoan Group plc, House of Lords, NATO, Telegraph Group, Soler Palau plc, Cancer Connections charity and many others.

The British Art Journal

Art & Technical Director

June 1999 – Present

Co-founded The British Art Journal with Editor Robin Simon. Oversaw production of the printed journal, then initiated the website and, in 2024, created the database-driven, online-only edition. I handle all technical and design issues.

The Watercolour World

Advisor, charitable digital heritage archive

Present

Advisory role with a charitable digital archive of pre-photographic watercolour images, covering site architecture and platform direction.

Apollo Magazine

Production

June 1993 – August 1998

Oversaw the implementation of computerised production at the magazine, designing new workflows to replace outdated cut-and-paste, non-digital systems. Introduced digital scanning of images, with significant cost savings.

Sculpture, 2:1 · 1980 – 1983

Eight GCE O-levels; A-levels in Maths, Art and Physics.

Background

After graduating I toured Europe with rock bands as a tour manager and tried a huge variety of other jobs, including motorcycle courier, before getting one of the first Apple computers and realising immediately which way the future was going.

Beyond the screen

I attend life-drawing classes and draw digitally on an iPad (of course!). See dnhdesign.art for examples. I have also produced many videos using AI.
